Participation is open to all filmmakers, producers and distributors of fulldome content worldwide. They must own the copyrights to the works they submit.

Submission procedure for Fulldome Film Contest

Fulldome film submissions are split into two categories:

  • Feature Films (16-60 minutes duration )
  • Short Films (maximum 15 minutes duration) 

All films entered into the Festival must have been completed on or after 1 January 2019 to be eligible for entry into the festival.
All films participate in the Main Contest and in the Special Contest.

    The age of the participant or one of the participants must not exceed 39 years.

    By submitting an entry to the Festival, each participant will be taken by The Grand Novosibirsk Planetarium to:
    A) irrevocably and unconditionally grant to The Grand Novosibirsk Planetarium a non-exclusive and royalty-free license to do all things necessary to consider the relevant film for screening at the Festival in Novosibirsk and (if selected by jury) screen the film at the Festival, including but not limited to making a copy of the film.
    B) provide the text of the screenplay to create subtitles or translation.
    C) consent to The Grand Novosibirsk Planetarium advertising the screening of the film, poster, trailer on its website, social media and in publicity materials. Each production will be credited to the copyright holder (as advised by the participant) during any screening at the Festival.
    D) The participant agrees that the Grand Novosibirsk planetarium makes a profit from the sale of tickets to the festival, in which the competitive work will be shown. The profit generated allows to cover the costs of organizing the festival.
    The organizer of the festival has the right to approve or reject the application after reviewing it. The organizer notifies the participant about the approval or rejection of the application by e-mail.
    By submitting an entry to the Festival, each participant will be taken by The Grand Novosibirsk Planetarium to represent and warrant to The Grand Novosibirsk Planetarium that it is entitled to use and deal with any intellectual property rights in the film, including grant the license to The Grand Novosibirsk Planetarium described above, and that the use by The Grand Novosibirsk Planetarium of the film (including screening at the Festival) will not infringe the third party rights of any person, including but not limited to copyright and/or moral rights.

    Fulldome film

    – The video sequence is provided as a sequence of fulldome (180° field in equidistant projection) master frames (DomeMaster (EDVA) in the RGB color model with a color depth of 24 bits.) Master files are sequentially numbered starting at 0 or 1. The number is assigned to the file name after the underscore character “_”, only lowercase and uppercase letters of the Latin alphabet and an underscore as a separator are allowed in file names, for example, “MyWork_00000.png”;
    – The orientation of the master frames corresponds to the orientation of the dome of the classical planetarium:
    center of the frame = zenith,
    bottom of the frame = south = front sector of the dome,
    top of frame = north = rear sector of dome,
    left = east = left sector,
    right = west = right sector;
    – Resolution: 2K (2048 x 2048 pixels), 3K (3072 x 3072 pixels), 4K (4096 x 4096 pixels);
    – Picture format: PNG, in the maximum quality JPG; the use of TIF, TGA, BMP, etc. formats is not allowed;
    – Frame rate: 30 fps;
    60 fps, 29,97 fps, 25 fps, 24 fps is not allowed;
    – Sound: 5.1 surround (L / R / C /  LFE / Ls / Rs) in WAV format, 16-bit, 24-bit or 32-bit, 44,1 kHz or 48 kHz, stereo in uncompressed WAV format is allowed. For synchronization, the sound must begin with the first frame.

    Demonstration copies of films participating in the Festival Contest must be in English and Russian, if available. All materials are provided as links for downloading via the Internet. Large files are better divided into several archives (up to 50 GB in size). Also, they must be transmitted through a special resource, which allows the file to be downloaded at any time (with the possibility of pausing). We recommend resilo, dropbox or FTP. 

    Submission procedure for Lecturer Contest

    The Lecture Contest accepts entries for real-time lectures about astronomy and astronautics. Duration  no more than 20 minutes.

    Awards categories:

    1. The best lections for planetarium
    2. The best lection by young professional

    “The best lection by young professional” award is given to participants who are no older than 39 years old and have no more than 3 years of experience in the planetarium at the time of their presentation.
    Participants should give lectures at Star Hall in The Grand Novosibirsk Planetarium for the jury and festival audience. Language – russian, english.
    The organizer of the festival has the right to approve or reject the application after reviewing it. The organizer notifies the participant about the approval or rejection of the application by e-mail. The number of contestants is limited. Pre-selection is being carried out.

      Submission Technical Specifications

      We use Sky Explorer 3.  How do the participants give a lecture? A) participants can give a lecture using their own fulldome video; B) participants can give a lecture using Sky Explorer 3. Our engineer will help to use Sky Explorer. The list of objects and the order of their demonstration is approved by the engineer. The engineer can refuse to show any object. We should know the list of objects in advance. Participants can use PowerPoint presentations, video and music.

      Highest score (from 1 to 10) on the criteria:  scientific credibility, harmonious structure, retention of the listener’s attention, novelty.

      Submission procedure for Immersive Works Contest

      Immersive work for planetarium is a theatrical performance or game program which uses fulldome video and where the viewer participates in narrative. 
      Submission open for 1) children’s theatrical performances (for children 4-12 years old);  2) game program for children 4-12 years old 3) theatrical performance for adults (16+); 
      Duration no more than 50 minutes. 
      Children’s theatrical performances – immersive theatrical performances for children in which are used fulldome screen and stage at the same time, performance includes games, dances. 
      Game program for children. Fulldome screen is used for demonstration game’s steps. 
      Theatrical performance for adults – immersive theatrical performances for adults in which are used fulldome screen and stage at the same time.
      The contest is open to planetarium, theater, and non-institutional theater groups.
